How to choose sports flooring for outdoor kindergarten activity areas?

Kindergarten activity areas have high demands for eco-friendliness, cushioning, anti-slip, and color. Suspended interlocking flooring with ANK4 four-leaf clover + SVS1 North Star is the mainstream solution. Clearly explains safety standards, selection, color patterning, and maintenance.

幼儿园户外活动场地如何选择运动地板? - 乐清香格里拉幼儿园(2018 年交付)— ANK4 四叶草拼花 / 8 年使用至今无脱扣

Yueqing Shangri-La Kindergarten (delivered 2018) — ANK4 four-leaf clover pattern / 8 years in use with no unlocking to date

Short answer:Selecting sports flooring for outdoor kindergarten activity areas,The first hurdle is environmental safety (GB 36246-2018 + strict control of phthalates), the second checkpoint is cushioning (impact absorption ≥ 50% to cushion injuries), and the third is color patterning (enhancing children's visual experience). AnchorCare kindergartens primarily recommend ANK4 Cloverleaf(PP base material + granular dot anti-slip) and SVS1 POLAR STAR(soft rubber 65A, impact absorption adjustable 55-80%), all passing the full GB 36246-2018 testing suite.

5 Special Requirements for Kindergarten Facilities

Eco-friendliness / hazardous substancesAll 18 items ≤ limits + strict phthalate controlGB 36246-2018
Cushioning / Cushioning injuryImpact absorption ≥ 50% (55–80% recommended)
Anti-Slip (dry and wet)R10 and above (DIN 51130)
Odor Rating≤ Level 3 (on a 5-level scale)GB 36246-2018
Color / patternNo fewer than 8 base colors + customizable patterns

Two recommended models for kindergartens

ANK4 Cloverleaf (PP base material)

SVS1 POLAR STAR (soft rubber)

Color patterning options

Kindergarten facilities can create rich patterns through single-tile color combinations, with 4 common types:

  1. Hopscotch grid: Grid tiles forming numbers/letters, guided educational games
  2. Animal patterns: Animal silhouettes + assembled from primary colors, enhancing visual appeal
  3. Functional zoning: Color-coded running track / balance zone / play zone
  4. Garden Emblem / Logo: Custom LOGO inlay patterns to strengthen brand recognition

During the design phase we provide: free interlocking-pattern renderings, single-tile usage calculations, and a sectioned installation plan. Yueqing Shangri-La Kindergarten (2018), Haiyan Kindergarten (2023), Qiaoxia Kindergarten (2023), and others all had custom interlocking patterns done.

Pitfall-avoidance guide

1. Do Not Focus on Price Alone

The biggest taboo for kindergarten flooring is "cheap recycled material." Low-quality PP is often mixed with recycled plastic, and phthalates (plasticizers) and heavy metals may exceed limits. The 30–60 RMB/㎡ price difference for proper testing covers your children's health risk over the next 8 years — it's worth it

2. Test Reports Must "Match Up"

The test report provided by the manufacturer must: 1) match the model actually purchased; 2) be issued within the last 2 years; 3) bear both CNAS and CMA marks; 4) be verifiable on the testing institution's official website.

3. Beware of Vague "Safety Standard" Wording

Phrases like "meets national standards" and "complies with environmental requirements" are too vague. The compliant wording should be "passed full-item testing under GB 36246-2018, issued on 2025-XX-XX by XX agency, report number XXXX"

4. Special treatment required under climbing frames/slides

For fall-risk areas such as slide landings and under climbing frames, we recommend SVS1 Polaris (soft rubber model) + thickened (25mm or 35mm), with over 70% impact absorption, easing the impact of a 1.5–2 meter fall.

FAQ

Suspended flooring or rubber mats for kindergartens?

Look at court size and budget. For small courts under 50㎡, rubber/EVA roll matting is low-cost; for courts over 50㎡, suspended interlocking flooring is recommended—individual tiles are replaceable, drainage is good, and color patterning is flexible, giving a lower total cost over 8 years.

Which is safer, soft PP or soft rubber?

All meet the GB 36246-2018 safety standard. The PP base material (ANK4) is low-cost with many colors; soft rubber (SVS1) has higher impact absorption and better cushioning against injury.Soft rubber is recommended under slide landings and climbing frames, while ordinary activity areas can use PP.

How thick should kindergarten flooring be?

13–17mm is sufficient for regular activity areas (ANK4 / ANK1F); for high fall-height zones such as climbing frames and slide landing areas, 25–35mm is recommended (SVS1 thickened version). Thicker is not always better—excessive thickness makes walking on flat ground unstable.

Will the color patterning fade?

Outdoor environments will gradually fade, but the degree is controllable. Premium modified PP (anti-UV formula) shows only slight color difference within 8 years, and dark colors (red/blue/green) resist fading better than light colors (white/yellow). In our case library, kindergarten venues delivered between 2017 and 2020 have maintained good color to this day.

How long does installation take?

A standard kindergarten site (500–1500㎡) can be paved in 2–4 days with 3–5 workers. This includes base inspection, single-tile assembly, color-pattern alignment, edge trimming, and line marking (if any). It saves 10–15 days of construction time compared with silicon PU/acrylic.
